A Weekend In The Lowcountry: This is how I love on my people. I bring friends here on purpose. This is where culture, soil and legacy meet.

Today, we remember. And we rejoice.

Juneteenth marks the day our ancestors heard what their hearts already knew:

We were never meant to be owned.

We carry that knowing through the food,
the work of our hands, the songs, the language, the soil—
the joy.

And we honor it by gathering, by learning,
by returning to the roots that made us.

And joy?
Joy was never anyone’s to take.

Because joy—the kind that lives deep in the bone,
passed down like recipes and hymns,
is a gift from God.

And we’ve carried that joy
through hurricanes and heartbreak,
through cotton fields and cookouts,
through attempted genocide and through song.

Joy is our inheritance.
And no system, no sorrow,
can silence what God has placed in our spirit.

The #lowcountry came to me as a late birthday gift this year! I had such a fun time with @atlfoodandwine @caymanjack and @kardeabrown. Finally made it to @iaamuseum! I loved the interactive nature of some of the exhibits. I was excited to see some keepers of the culture featured as well like @gullahron @chefbjdennis @jonathangreenart 🙌🏾 My favorite part was the Center for Family History. Our lineage is so important. Give yourself a full day. Lots to digest. 🤎

This time last year, I was feverishly preparing for my curated experience in Charleston ( A Weekend In The Lowcountry). I pulled together all things Black food, beverage, history and culture from my personal Lowcountry heroes. It rained on our second to last day. We were supposed to take photos, but the weather was a MESS! Windy, rainy, cold. Hair kryptonite 😂. Anyway, we pushed forward. It reminds me a little of my current circumstances (Life is life-ing, you hear me?!) But, I will choose JOY no matter the circumstances. God is faithful. This song is the only one I could think of to reflect the moment. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Anyone have other suggestions for songs that encourage you to keep your head high and dance in the rain? ☔️

🎤 Is this thing on? It’s been a while! Although I’ve been “quiet,” my Lowcountry love is active and well! My heart still beats for the rich legacy of Black + Indigenous people, our resilience and our contribution to the current culture. This Thanksgiving I’m grateful for the hospitality of the binya AND the comeya all throughout the area. I’m still on a quest to curate experiences for those curious travelers who want a retreat AND have a desire to understand the history of the region. Lest we forget.

There were some things that didn’t go “my way,” but EVERY trip to the Lowcountry is nothing short of sacred (to me) because those who came before us survived and left us a legacy. 🙏🏽

And we are learning the basics of sweetgrass basket weaving lesson from the talented Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson of @gullahsweetgrassbaskets. We'll wrap the day with a twilight dinner and portraits against the Charleston sunset. ⁠
